About Parambikulam wildlife sanctuary
The history of Parambikulam starts from the 19th century. During that period the forests of Parambikulam operates on two administrative units namely Sungam Forest Reserve and Parambikulam Forest Reserve. In 1921 the plantation of teak started at Parambikulam and in 1983 it was ended. In 1962 P. Narayanan Nair planned and constituted special teak plantation division in Parambikulam. During this period Sungam forest reserve were declared as Parambikulam Wild Life Sanctuary.
Location of Parambikulam wildlife sanctuary, Kerala is in Anna malai hills, Palakkad which spreads over 285 sqkm. This sanctuary has got a patchy grasslands which gives a natural environment to the forest. The sanctuary is opened to the visitors at any time but it is not suitable to go on monsoon season. Visitors can easily reach here as Palakkad is connected with wide networks of road. There are variety of rare species in Parambikulam wildlife sanctuary, Kerala which attracts the tourists from foreign places.

1) Fauna and Mammals
Fauna and mammals includes Bonnet macaques, lion, tailed macaques, Nilgiri langurs, loris, tigers, leopards, jungle cats, mongoose, focen, bears, elephants, gaurs, Nilgiri tahrs, spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, wild boars, pangolins.
2) Fishes
Variety of rare fishes can be found here.Some of them are Arals, brals, vatudis, thilopias, noovis, mooshus, poochittis, kollotties, exypriuses, tarals, mahaseer etc. Capped kingfisher, great Indian bombills, broad billed rollers, back woodpeckers.
3) Reptiles
Different types of reptiles are found like Crocodiles, varanur pond terrapins, cane trutiles, geckoes, skunks, chameleons, snakes like king cobras, spectacled cobras, kraits, vipers, pythons, green keel backs, rat snakes, vine snakes.
4) Flora
Rare types of Floras are found such as Neem, nanjanathi, sandal, dendrocalamus and bamboosa arundinacea, teak, vengal, muzhukanjiram, maruthu, vaka, mulluvenga, rosewood, manjakadambu pala, elavu, vembu, aval, vanteak.
5) 40 m high and 6.4 m huge teak named as kannimara teak which stands as a monument at Parambikulam.
6) View points
Lake, Dam and Valley view points is another major attraction of Parambikulam wildlife sanctuary.
